Kamena Vourla Hot Springs

Kamena Vourla hot springs are classified by specialists as the most important in Greece and in Europe overall. The hot springs are the result of great geological changes of the Maliakos Gulf and of the Kallidromos-Krimnis massif. What makes them so special, is the rare composition of minerals, salts and radon. In 1926 a chemist by the name of Michail Pertesis discover exceptionally high radon concentration in the water. The radon content in the spring water is unique and superior, compared to European springs, thus defining bathing in it is of great benefit to the human body.

The springs gush forth at the foot of Mount Krimnos and have different temperature, and radioactivity level. There are four different springs in the area, each one with different ingredients and heals different things: the radioactive springs, the radioactive springs, hydrogen sulphide-chloride spring, ferruginous spring, and the cosmetic spring of Aphrodite. The water of the springs feeds the Hydrotherapy of “Asklipios” which has a whirlpool bath for personal use, small pools and a large open pool.  The temperature of the water varies from 35-36°C and is suitable for the treatment of many diseases such as:

  • Gouty Arthritis
  • Degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis arthritis deformans knee, hip and other joints)
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Chronic rheumatoid arthritis
  • Rheumatic tendon-muscle diseases
  • Rizonefritida radiculitis (sciatica, neuralgia)
  • Stimulate visual - auditory nerve
  • Neurovegetative disorders, forms of psychoneurosis
  • Disorders or glandular deficiencies through secretions, especially ovarian (dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, sterility)
  • Some forms of bronchial asthma
  • Chronic gynecological diseases
  • Eczema arthritic or nervous nature, allergic dermatoses

The hot springs are located in the town of Kamena Vourla, a tourist resort with hotels, restaurants, spas, and beaches, since it is on the sea. Some of the hotels in Kamena Vourla offer spa facilities, such as the 5-star Mitsis Galini Wellness Spa & Resort. Kamena Vourla is easily accessible via the main national highway (PATHE) that passes by and connects Athens with northern Greece. The spa town is 177 km (1 h 59 mins) from Athens, 33 km (33 mins from Lamia, and 328 km (3h 33 mins from Thessaloniki. The combination of sea, thermal springs and forested mountain, render the area a remarkable, emblematic and famous resort, at a close distance from Athens, which attracts significant tourist traffic.

Kamena Vourla is very close to the archaeological sites of Thermopylae and the Castle of Mendenitsa. A bit further is the mountain village of Pavliani. A few kilometers south is the port of Agios Konstantinos, where you catch the ferry to the Sporades Islands (Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonisso), as well as Arkitsa where you can catch the ferry that goes to the spa town of Edipsos in Evia.

Two more hot springs can be found in the same area. They are at Thermopylae, just a few kilometers away from Kamena Vourla. It is the spring of Leonidas (37°C) and the spring of the Three Hundred (40oC). Those hot springs are indicated for rheumatic, gynecological and peripheral nervous system conditions.
