Healing Waters Amid Lakeside Beauty in the Peloponnese
Nestled at the foot of Mount Lapitha in southern Ilia, Peloponnese, the Kaiafas Thermal Springs are a destination of natural beauty and historic significance, known since antiquity for their therapeutic properties. The site is home to two renowned springs: the Anigrides Nymphs Spring and the Geras Spring, also known as the Atlantides Nymphs Spring. According to Greek mythology, the centaur Chiron came here to heal his wounds from Hercules’ poisoned arrows, and the mystical Anigrides nymphs were said to have dwelled in these caves.
The thermal waters flow from the Anigrides Cave into a scenic lake, forming a serene setting ideal for wellness and relaxation. This area, encompassing 6,139 acres including the Kaiafas Forest, is protected under the Natura 2000 network for its ecological value and natural beauty.
A Longstanding Wellness Destination
Kaiafas began operating as a spa resort in 1907, following the construction of a railway line serving the area. From the 1960s until 1999, the springs were managed by the Hellenic Tourism Organization (EOT), and since 2000, they have been under the Public Properties Company. The spa operates from May 15 to November 15, offering thermal therapy in a rejuvenating lakeside setting that blends forest, lake, and nearby sea.
The spa facilities include:
- A hydrotherapy center with a retractable-roof outdoor thermal pool
- 13 individual bath cabins
- A medical office
- Reception and waiting areas
- A café
Water therapy here is especially beneficial for:
- Musculoskeletal conditions (e.g., arthritis, sciatica, osteoarthritis, rheumatism)
- Gynaecological and dermatological ailments
- Liver and gallbladder disorders
The thermal waters are rich in sodium chloride and hydrogen sulfide, with temperatures ranging from 29°C to 35°C in different sections of the Anigrides Cave, creating a natural steam bath effect. About 200 meters away lies the Geras Spring, whose mineral water is ideal for internal use (drinking therapy).
