Kanala Kythnos

The coastal village of Kanala is located on the south-east of Kythnos Island, next to a small pine forest, which is actually the only one on the island. The village is famous due the beautiful Christian Orthodox church of Panagia Kanala which stands on a cliff near the village and houses the miraculous 17th century icon of the Virgin Mary painted by the great Cretan artist Antonis Skordilis. There are three very nice sandy beaches in or within walking distance of Kanala (Megali Ammos, Antonides and Ammoudaki beach) and the village is known for its two grand fests dedicated to the Virgin Mary on August 15 and September 8. Besides the famous church, at the edge of the peninsula stands the quaint chapel of Agia Kaliopi with great view of the endless blue of the Aegean Sea. Merichas, the island’s main port is half an hour away and the traditional village of Dryopida about 5km away. The drive is easy and, on the way, you will enjoy amazing views. If you do not have a car, the village is served by regular buses from Merichas and Dryopida but only during the summer period. In Kanala, there are traditional tavernas with delicious seafood, some rooms and studios to rent and a few shops to buy all the basics. Kanala is a very peaceful place where everything seems to be in walking distance, which is perfect for relaxing holidays. It is a nice place to visit, away from the hustle and bustle of city life and the typical tourist trap.
