Koskinou
Koskinou is a hillside village, one of the oldest on Rhodes. It is well-known for its traditional neoclassical houses painted with bright, vibrant colors and for the colorful doorways. Even the pathways are painted with colorful patterns while others are covered with pebble mosaics. Most houses are perfectly kept, many others are empty and abandoned. Some are decoretad with ceramic plates at the entrance.
Heavy wooden doors or iron gates vibrantly colored, all decorated with arched portals, is what makes Koskinou village so charming. These portals lead to beautiful courtyards filled with jasmine trees, fuchsia bougainvillea and potted plants. Some of those courtyards are often paved with white and black pebble mosaics adorned with Rhodian motifs. However, you will not see any of these doors on your first arrival in the village. In fact, at first sight you won't find Koskinou particularly impressive. All you have to do is to make your way down some of the narrow streets of the preserved part of the village and there you will find yourself right in the middle of this unique mosaic of colors. This attractive village is every photographer’s and Instagrammer’s dream.
The historic town dates back to the 15th century. Archaeological finds and preserved Byzantine coins are traces of its long history. They can be found in all nooks as you wander around the town. The village is house to a few interesting attractions. The small domed church of Agia Irini more than 200 years old and the tiny Basilica of Agios Loukas, dating from the 4th century are worth a visit. So is the small medieval Knights’ castle, located on the outskirts of the village, , the church of the Virgin Mary as well as the “Traditional House”, decorated with ceramic plates and hand-woven fabrics. The view from the castle is marvelous. In addition, many ancient ruins and graves can be found around the village. Whilst in Koskinou, do not miss to try the traditional sweet known as 'melekouni', a delicacy made of honey and sesame seeds. The sweet is made by the women of this village on the eve of major festivals.
The new part of the town has modern buildings and is the place where wealthy people live. Located only 7 kilometers from the capital of the island, this hilltop village is a true hidden gem. Koskinou is off the beaten path and most visitors may prefer the better-known villages of Rhodes. Nonetheless, it is highly recommended a visit to this enchanting village to anyone who’s in Rhodes. Koskinou offers small family hotels and rooms to let, for those who wish to stay here and experience the traditional mood of the village. It is also well known for its traditional cuisine. Koskinou is very close to Kalithea Springs and to the famous resort of Faliraki.
