Visit a Serene Mountain Escape in the Heart of Thessaly
Discover Loggas Lake near Meteora, a scenic artificial lake set at an altitude of 1,100 meters in the western foothills of the Antichasia Mountains, just 3 km from the village of Loggas in Thessaly. Created in 2002 to supply water to nearby settlements and irrigate farmland, the lake has since become a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, hikers, anglers, and cyclists.
Wooden picnic tables and a small lakeside kiosk invite visitors to relax, while the nearby Chapel of the Transfiguration, hidden among oak trees, adds a charming cultural touch to the landscape. The area is beautiful year-round, but in summer the lake comes to life with fishing competitions, and during Clean Monday and May Day, locals gather here for traditional outdoor celebrations.
Activities
Visitors can enjoy an easy 2 km walking and cycling loop that circles the lake, ideal for a relaxed 30-minute walk or gentle mountain biking. The trail is flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for families, children, and older visitors. Several additional paths lead into the surrounding forests and up to viewpoints offering impressive panoramic views of the Thessalian countryside.
How to Get There
Loggas Lake is easily reached by car: approximately 50 km from Trikala (1 hour), 76 km from Larissa (1 hour 20 minutes), and 86 km from Karditsa (1 hour 25 minutes) via Trikala. Many visitors combine a trip to the lake with excursions to the Meteora monasteries (45 km, 50 minutes) or the Theopetra Cave. A scenic drive continues to the mountain village of Verdikousa, where traditional tavernas and accommodation options are available. Although the road has several bends, the natural scenery makes the journey especially rewarding.
