Built on a rock, about 200 meters above sea level, Chora is the heart of the island. Perched on the crest of the island, unsteadily balanced on a cliff, is the capital of Folegandros and one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages in the Cyclades. The traditional village with its cobbled streets, the whitewashed houses with the courtyards and the castle is one of the most well-preserved villages in the Aegean. It is closed to car and motorcycle traffic and has a unique center of three squares in a row, with trees under which to enjoy a drink or a traditional meal.

The view from the steep northern side of the Kastro is breathtaking. Pounta square is the main square where you can find the necessary tourist information and above all one of the most beautiful viewpoints over the sea and the sunset. A bit further, Piazza Square is the oldest square of Chora and the place where most of the taverns, restaurants and bars are. Next to it is the Danube square with the old churches of Taxiarchis and Agios Nikolaos.

One of the main attractions is Kastro, the best-preserved fortress city of the Cyclades and one of the most photographed spots of Folegandros. It is the oldest part of Chora and the prettiest part of the village. It was built by Marco Sanudo, the Duke of Naxos and can be entered through two arcades, the Loggia and the Paraporti. It dates from 1212 AD and consists of a number of houses built around a square and some streets in such a way that they make a fortress together. Kastro has been inhabited continuously since its establishment.

On the northeast side of Chora on a cliff hill stands the beautiful 19th century white Church of Panagia, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. From the vantage point of the Panagia’s courtyard, there are wonderful views over Chora, the island of Folegandros and the sea. It is also a stunning spot to enjoy a beautiful sunset. A trail starting from Punta square leads up to the quaint church.

The nearest beaches are in Karavostasi, the port of the island which is 3.5 km away and Agali. Regular bus services connect Chora with both the port and Agali as well as with Ano Meria, the second village of the island. For hiking lovers there is a trail from Chora leading down to the beach of Agali. Do not forget to taste Matsata, the traditional handmade pasta.
