Pyrgos Kallistis or simply Pyrgos is a picturesque, traditional village on the island of Santorini, situated approximately 7 km away from the island's capital Fira. It is built amphitheatrically on the hill of Prophet Elias and it is the highest village of the whole island, providing magnificent views of Santorini in almost all directions. On top of the hill there are the ruins of a Venetian castle, one of the five castles of Santorini, that was once the island's administrative center. Pyrgos is a typical example of a medieval village with narrow winding alleys, stone houses, fortified walls and hidden passages.
Blue domed churches are scattered throughout the village. It is worth visiting the monastery of Prophet Elias, one of the oldest churches on the island, dating back to the 10th century. The church of the Holy Trinity, which was once a catholic church of a nunnery, now houses an important collection of Ecclesiastical relics of the 16th-19th century. On the west side lies the church Theotoki or Koimisis of Theotokou while the church of Eisodion of Theotokou is found on the highest level of the castle.
Pyrgos is surrounded by vineyards and remarkable wineries where you can visit, learn about the wine making history of the island and taste the famed Santorini wine. It also offers great accomodation options that consist of hotels, studios, apartments and rooms to rent.
Check if the village is officially recognized for its cultural or historical significance. This includes monuments, protected settlements, and historical settlements according to the Ministry of Culture.
