Axios Delta National Park

Axios Delta National Park is one of the most important protected wetlands in Greece and a paradise for birdwatchers, wildlife photographers and nature lovers. Located on the western shores of the Thermaic Gulf, just 30 km west of Thessaloniki, the park protects an extraordinary landscape of river deltas, lagoons, marshes, salt flats, reed beds and coastal dunes, making it one of the richest ecosystems in southeastern Europe.

Officially known as Axios–Loudias–Aliakmonas National Park, the protected area includes the Axios River Delta, the Loudias and Aliakmonas river deltas, Kalochori Lagoon, Kitros Salt Pans, the Nea Agathoupoli Wetland, and the estuary of the Gallikos River. Thanks to its remarkable diversity of habitats, it has been designated both a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and a Natura 2000 protected area.

The park is one of the premier birdwatching destinations in Greece, with nearly 300 bird species recorded throughout the year. Depending on the season, visitors may spot Greater Flamingos at Kalochori Lagoon, Dalmatian Pelicans, Glossy Ibises, Pygmy Cormorants, Pied Avocets, herons, egrets and many migratory birds. The riparian forest of the Axios River also supports one of the most significant mixed breeding colonies of waterbirds in Europe. Beyond its rich birdlife, the park is home to more than 40 mammal species, numerous reptiles and amphibians, and one of Europe's largest populations of the Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise.

One of the best things to do near Thessaloniki is to explore the park's wetlands by car, bicycle or on foot, stopping at its observation points to admire the scenery and wildlife. The area is especially popular with photographers during spring and autumn, when thousands of migratory birds pass through the delta, while winter offers exceptional opportunities for birdwatching.
