The Burning of Judas
Easter in Greece is a glorious and important feast, celebrated with great devotion and tradition. There are many customs related to this celebration all rich in symbolism. One of the most captivating traditions of Holy Week is the burning of Judas that takes place in many different places around the country. Unlike other cities and villages where the burning of Judas takes place in squares or streets, in the city of Agios Nikolaos in Crete this custom take place in the middle of Lake Voulismeni, located in the heart of the city. On Holy Saturday as midnight approaches, the city comes alive with hymns. A dummy representing Judas, the betrayer of Jesus, is placed on a raft and set ablaze as dozens of fireworks light up the sky. This symbolizes the punishment of Judas and the victory of good over evil. This unique custom attracts many locals and visitors and invites everyone to embrace the spirit of Easter. Visitors have also the chance to experience the local culture and learn more about Greek traditions and their symbolisms.
