Anafi

Anafi (Greek: Ανάφη) is a Greek island community in the Cyclades. It lies east of the island of Thíra (Santorini). Anafi is part of the Thira regional unit. The capital of Anafi (Chora), is a traditional settlement and is located in the southern part of the island. Is distinguished from the capital of other Cycladic islands due to is numerous arched single-room homes, which occupy a large area of the settlement. Narrow cobbled streets criss-cross the village, leading to the Venetian Kastro (fortress),the initial nucleus and heart of the village. Pedestrians are free to wander around, as Chora, being at traditional settlement, is off-limits to vehicles. Anafi is very much an island for walking. Through the old paths and around the steep hills, you can walk to the other side of the island. A peninsula at the eastern end of the island is dominated by a monolithic peak, Mt. Kalamos, among the largest in the Mediterranean at 420 m (1,378 ft). Anafi is claimed to have 181 species of rare flora. It is also one of the islands where Eleonora's Falcon can be seen, a falcon ("hobby") which preys on migrating birds and breeds in the late summer/ autumn.
