Samiopoula

Samiopoula which literally means "small Samos" is the largest of the islets that surround Samos. It is located almost half a mile south of Samos and it can only be reached by boat. On the islet there is a small settlement on which the 2001 census reported a population of five inhabitants. Among the few buildings are the two picturesque chapels, the small parish churches of Agia Pelagia and the Ascension of Christ. Most of the terrain is rocky with very few trees and several species of low shrubs and wildflowers.

Samiopoula is a popular daytrip destination for tourists that visit the villages of Pythagorion and Marathokampos from where most of the wooden boats sail to the island. On the island you will find the beach of Psalida, a small sheltered bay of fine sand, crystal clear, turquoise waters and an exotic character. It has only a few umbrellas and nothing else. It attracts many visitors therefore it tends to get very crowded in summer. In Samiopoula visitors can spend a beautiful day on the beach, enjoy a unique view of Samos and get a feeling of escape. Do not be surprised if you see wild goats roaming the beach or sitting under the shade. The islet can be easily explored as it is quite small. You can climb up the hills and make a walk around the island where you will also find the bay of Katsakas where many sailing boats often anchor.
