Marathi

If you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed by city life and you daydream about getting away on a remote Greek island few people know about, Marathi Island is exactly what you have been looking for. The tiny island is situated 12 nautical miles east of Patmos, southwest of Arki and northwest of Lipsi Island, in the Dodecanese. Marathi is off the tourist path and free from crowds, traffic, noise and pollution. Although it is inhabited, few people live here so it could be perceived as uninhabited. It is one of Greece's least populated islands with only a dozen residents in summertime, reduced to three during the winter.

There in not much to see or do in Marathi, not even during high season. Here there are only two tavernas, three pensions, two jetties, a tiny church on top of the hill that you maybe want to take a look at, and a pretty sandy beach in a large and sheltered bay. The water is amazingly blue and usually calm thanks to the protective bay. The bay is also perfect for sailing boats and you will probably see many boats anchor, off the beach. In Marathi you won't find any shops, cars, nightlife or villages. It is a good place to totally relax and a paradise for those who want to escape the city bustle. Many Marathi visitors use the word paradise to describe this tiny island and this is what actually is. A perfect place to sit and read a book, sunbathe on the beach, swim in the bay and explore secluded coves and the beautiful landscape of the island.

Overnight visitors have three accommodation options on Marathi. Two of the properties have a tavern with delicious homemade food. There is one taverna at either end of the beach, and one taverna at the middle of the beach. There are several ways to reach Marathi, however there are no regular boat services and it is not possible to go on a package holiday. Instead, you have to rely on boats from the island of Arki that will take you there in 5 minutes. During summer, there are also boat trips from Leros, Lipsi and Patmos. Another option is to hire a private boat and sail to Marathi and the other Dodecanese islands. So, if you wish to visit the most remote and relaxing island of the Dodecanese where the number of goats is way higher than the number of humans, this island is the right place for you.
