Monastery of Evangelistria of Skopelos
The monastery of Evangelistria is situated on the slope of Mount Palouki - in a place with a great view - and its fortuitous appearance is connected with the raids of the pirates. It was built in 1712, on the ruins of an older Byzantine monastery in 1676, by Hadji-Stephani Daponte (father of Caesarios Daponte) and belongs to the Monastery of Xeropotamos on Mount Athos. Today there are nuns in the monastery. You can visit the monastery daily from 08.00-13.00 and 17.00-19.00. It should be noted here that this timetable is generally applicable to the remaining monasteries of Skopelos inhabited. In the large inner courtyard you will find a covered fountain that mentions Caesar Daoped as the founder of the Monastery, as well as a small exhibition with various utensils and icons. In the monastery there are old icons of the 14th century and its iconostasis is covered with gold leaf (made in a workshop of Constantinople) and is decorated with plant and animal performances as well as with performances from the Old and New Testaments. The founding and acne of the Monastery are directly related, as mentioned, to the large Daponde family. In addition to the testimony of the scholarly monk, no other written source has been preserved to inform us about the foundation and renovation of the monastery
