Tripotamos

Tripotamos is a traditional village on the island of Tinos and the nearest village to Chora. It is one of the oldest villages and owes its name to its geographical location since it is built between three rivers. On the northern side of the village stands the bare rock of Exombourgos with ruins of the Medieval city of Tinos and findings of the Prehistoric and Geometric period. On the slope of Exombourgo above the village there was also a temple, dedicated to goddess Demeter. Its southern side overlooks the monastery of Agia Pelagia and the Aegean Sea with the neighboring island of Delos. Tripotamos is of special architectural interest as it looks like a castle, with houses very close to each other, arches and a maze of labyrinthine cobbled streets. This structure helped the village to stay safe from pirate raids through the centuries. What makes Tripotamos even more special is that it may be the only village in whole Greece where there is not a public square.

Tripotamos houses a Folklore Museum and the remarkable parish church of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1853. The church is adorned with marble artefacts and a small pebble courtyard. It celebrates on November 21st, day on which a huge feast takes place. Homemade appetizers are offered to visitors and the narrow alleys resound with songs until very late. A similar feast takes place in the 3rd week of August. The Wine Festival of Tinos is a fairly new festival with concerts, art exhibitions, dancing, eating and drinking. Finally, every year, on Christmas Day, the mysterious custom of Kavos is revived. In the village spent the last years of his life Cornelius Castoriadis, one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century.

From Tripotamos start many well maintained and signposted trekking trails, leading to picturesque villages and the hinterland. Tripotamos is situated 5 km from Chora, the island's capital, on the crossroad to the traditional villages of Exomeria, Mesa and Pano Meri and to the neighboring village of Sperados.
