Dio Choria
Amphitheatrically built on the side of a mountain, the village offers great views of the sea and the surrounding Cycladic islands. Because of this spectacular view it is also known as the 'balcony of Tinos'. If the atmosphere is clear, you can see as far as the island of Naxos. The name Dio Choria (means Two Villages in Greek) is due to the fact that initially there were two separate villages, each with its own parish, which over time merged. They are still distiguished with the terms "Pano Chorio (Upper Village)" and "Kato Chorio (Lower Village)" as a description of their geographical location. Lying in a green area with abundant water, features five natural springs whose water runs all the way down to the town of Tinos.
Dio Choria is a typical Cycladic village with arcades, arches, paved labyrinthine alleys and a large paved square with a fountain. At the entrance of the village stands an ancient plane tree, offering its shade to visitors. In Kato Chorio (Lower Village) is the church of the Assumption of the Virgin, a three-aisled basilica with a raised middle aisle. The church dates back to the years of Venetian domination. The village houses a marble sculpture workshop, marble carvings of which adorn public and private spaces, mainly on the island of Tinos.
Dio Choria is 8.5 km from Tinos Town and visitors can find some rooms to let and a few taverns serving traditional meals, cooked with local ingredients.
