The Kalloni sardine is famous around the world for their distinct flavor. From November to June the Kalloni sardine reproduces in the shallow waters of the bay. It is distinguished for its small size and unique taste, and are highly nutritious rich in omega-3 fat, vitamins D and B12, and protein. It is typically canned, but it can also be cooked in various ways: grilled, baked or fried. The Sardine Festival takes place in Kalloni, Lesvos every year on the first or second weekend of August. Freshly grilled sardines are offered to locals and tourists free along with plenty of ouzo from the local distilleries. The festival includes live Greek music and traditional dances. If you are a seafood lover, this festival is a must.
