Katerini
The Katerini Municipal Park is located very close to the city center and covers an area of about 50 acres. It is a nice expanse of green in the middle of town and a good way to get away from the cars and noise. A nice place to relax, have a cool drink or a lovely tasty ice cream. Some fountains and water features add to the feeling of coolness here. The water features are nice and you can sit on a bench and enjoy a few minutes in the shade. It is a well-maintained park which also features paved paths, bridges, playgrounds even a small zoo mainly of birds which is great for children. The park attracts many families, people who exercise and others who just want to relax. The combination of dense vegetation and the water features create an idyllic landscape.
Until the liberation of the city by the Ottomans, the park was used as a barrack and a place for military exercises. At the northern entrance of the park, you can still find two canons from that era, reminiscent of the Turkish presence in the city and the liberation from the Greeks. After the liberation of the city, the place was formed as a recreational area with a small zoo. Today the park hosts the Cultural Center of Katerini, the Municipal Library, a music hall, and an arts hall. There is also a small outdoor theater where various music and dancing events take place every summer. But apart from that, the park hosts occasionally various festivals and art exhibitions. It is an oasis for residents of Katerini on hot summer days and a meeting point for nice strolls.
