Springs of Agios Georgios

The springs are located on the slopes of Xirovouni mountain, near the village of Agios Georgios in the prefecture of Preveza. According to tradition, "in the natural arch formed by the rocks, 3 km before Filippiada, on the Ioannina Preveza National Road, the locals once saw Agios Georgios (St. George) galloping on a winged horse, chasing the dragon. Agios Georgios blessed the place and from then on, water began to gush from the earth. To honor the Saint the locals gave his name to the village."

The water gushes with momentum through a cave and supplies the prefectures of Arta, Preveza and Lefkada. The Romans were the first to use it, constructing the Aqueduct of Nikopolis, a colossal work of antiquity, remains of which are preserved to this day.

Next to the springs, in an area covered with plane trees a wonderful recreation park has been formed with benches, barbeques and tables. Near the springs you can also find some watermills that receive the rushing water as soon as it comes out of the cave and the hydroelectric dam of Louros.
