Kranai
Cranae or Kranai also known as Marathonisi is an island off the coast of Gytheio connected to the land by a causeway built in 1898. The name "Marathonisi" translates to 'fennel-island' as the herb grows in quantities on the islet. The islet is covered by a pine forest and is an ideal place for beautiful photos and walks overlooking the amphitheatrically built city of Gythio with its neoclassical houses.
According to legend, when Paris of Troy abducted Helen from Sparta they spent their first night in Cranae, before returning to Troy. The name Kranai is linked to this legend, as Paris forgot his helmet (kranos in Greek) when they left in a hurry. The traditional tower of Tzannetakis Grigorakis which was built in 1929 in order to accommodate the Grigorakis family, is one of the main attractions. Nowadays, it houses the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mani.On the other side of the islet there is one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece. The imposing lighthouse of Kranai, built in 1873 from marble of Tainaro. On the island there is also a quaint chapel dedicated to St Peter (Agios Petros) which is favored by many couples to use on their weddings due to its beautiful views of the city of Gytheio and picturesque location. Kranai has been characterized as an archeological site by the Ministry of Culture.
