Salamina
Only two out of 10 in total old windmills still stand on top of Agios Nikolaos hill on the island of Salamina, overlooking the west side of the island. Built in the 18th century, they were widely used to mill wheat and provide flour for the people of the island. Unfortunately, the windmills were left to fall in complete despair. The two mills are in a beautiful place between pine trees on top of a hill with great sea views of the Saronic Gulf.
The windmills were constructed by experienced mill craftsmen and operated alongside the horse-mills and hand-mills until the last twenty years of the 19th century. At that time the first two steam-powered mills were founded on the island and the use of the windmills was gradually declined and the mills finally ceased production. The architecture of each of them is similar, all have a round shape, two floors, white color, a conic roof, interior stone stairs and two windows on the upper floor. Similar windmills are found in almost all Cyclades islands.
