Komolithi
The Sand Dunes (or Komolithi) is one of the most bizarre and interesting landscapes in Crete, located near the village of Potamida, about 35Km west of Chania, within the administration boundaries of Kissamos. The strange-shaped dunes were created due to erosion of underlying soft clay soils over thousands of years ago. According to scientists the area where Komolothoi are located, was under water millions of years ago. This explains the presence of marine fossils and the type of geological material of which the hills were created. Researchers from the University of Crete, who recently took a closer look at this place, also found traces of pyrite and gold. The pyramid slopes are mostly bare on the sides but with small bushes on their summit, creating a striking contrast.
The pyramids are very close to the village houses, in the middle of a fertile field, which makes the landscape unique. During the summer, you can safely climb the less steep cones that are dry during this period as well as walk among them.
