Florina
Located in the NW corner of Greece between imposing mountains and thick forests, the mountain town of Florina is well-known for its stunning architecture and beautiful views. It is a lively and beautiful small town with a population of approximately 20,000 people, and one of the most popular winter destinations in the whole country. The town runs along the Sakoulevas River, on the banks of which there are traditional mansions of neoclassical and Macedonian architecture which reflect the economic prosperity of the town. Florina experienced an outstanding cultural and economic uplift around 1893, signs of which are perfectly encapsulated in the buildings of the early 20th century.
Walk along the river and enjoy the most authentic part of the town, through the buildings and the workshops of local artists. A visit to the Archaeological Museum with its remarkable collection, the Artist Gallery housed in one of the railway station’s old buildings and the Museum of Modern Art home to a permanent collection of local artists, will complement the cultural canvas of the city. The central square is adorned with well-preserved public buildings, the old prison and the Turkish Baths, and along the free of cars main street, Pavlou Mela you can find most of the cafes and restaurants. The remains of the Hellenistic Lygistida on the hill of Agios Panteleimon will travel you mentally in time and from the top of the hill you will enjoy panoramic views of the city. If you find yourself in Florina during Christmas Eve you will enjoy a spectacular tradition where locals start fires on the streets of the town.
Don’t leave the town without having bought some of Florina’s exquisite local products, such as Florina red peppers, beans from Prespes, mountain tea, wines of Amyntaio, local sweets and knitted candles made from skillful local candle makers. Florina has always been one of Greece’s coldest cities and temperature often drops below 0 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, snow is more often seen here than anywhere else in Greece and the town is often covered in thick fog that may last even for weeks under specific conditions. Florina is a great place to go in mid-August when everywhere else is hot and crowded as well as a perfect winter destination due to the heavy snowfalls and the nearby ski resorts. The town is the gateway to the Prespa Lakes, to the traditional village of Nimfeo and to the ski resort of Vigla. Florina knows how to enchant everyone and is beautiful all seasons.
