Plaka
The charming and well-preserved village of Plaka is the capital of Milos. It is built over the village of Adamas, at an altitude of about 200 m. overlooking the gulf of Milos. The village with the narrow-cobbled streets, the white houses with blue doors and windows and the whitewashed courtyards packed with beautiful flowers lies on the highest hill of the island and it attracts many tourists during the summer. In Plaka you can get lost in the narrow streets, explore the nooks and admire the Cycladic architecture.
The castle of Plaka, known as "Kastro", located at the highest point of the village was built by the Venetians in the 13th century. The village is an extension of the castle district which started growing in the 18th century because of the population growth in Kastro and people started establishing themselves lower down the hill. The castle once protected the residents against pirate attacks. During the Middle Ages the residents of Kastro could see enemy ships at quite a distance, giving them plenty of time to protect themselves.
At the tоp οf Kаstrо stands the Assumption οf Virgin Mary or Mesa Panagia. From its courtyard yοu саn gaze the surrounding Cycladic islands and enjoy some of the most аmаzing sunsets. A bit lower is the church of the Epiphany of Christ or Panagia Thalassitra, patron saint of the sailors and the most photographed church on the island. Walking through the narrow streets you will come across the Cathedral of Milos, the church of Panagia Korfiatissa, built in 1820. While in Plaka, it is worth visiting the Archaeological Museum where you can see a copy of the statue of Aphrodite of Milos since the original resides in the Louvre museum in Paris. Plaka also hosts the Folklore Museum, with exhibits related to daily life on the island from the 17th century and where you can learn about the Milos culture.
In the narrow streets of the village, traditional tavernas serve local delicacies while in the small cafes you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the picturesqu settlement. The Milos Festival is organized in Plaka and a big feast in honor of Panagia Korfiatissa takes place in Plaka, every year, on September 8.
