Cape Tainaro or Tenaro, also called Cape Matapan, is the southernmost point of mainland Greece, and the second southernmost point in mainland Europe. It is situated at the end of the Mani Peninsula, and separates the Messenian Gulf in the west from the Laconian Gulf in the east. According to Greek mythology it was named after the mythical son of Zeus, Taenarus, founder of the ancient city of Taenarum, near which was the entrance to Hades; the gate to the underworld. This gate was guarded by Cerberus, a multi-headed hound that prevented the dead from escaping and the living from entering the world of the dead.  On the hill situated above the cave lie the remnants of an ancient temple, dedicated to Poseidon, God of the sea. The place though was sacred long before that, when the Greeks used to worship Helios, the sun-God here.

Under the Byzantine Empire, the ancient temple was transformed into a Christina church. Years later, in 1717, the battle of Matapan took place between the Venetian navy and the Ottoman fleet. The cape’s strategic location played a role in World War II as well, when an important battle unfolded off the coast between the British Navy and the Italian fleet. As a result, the Italian naval activity was limited in the Eastern Mediterranean after the battle. Steeped In history, mythology, and natural beauty, Cape Tainaron has been an important place for thousands of years. As you explore further, you will find an historical stone lighthouse with great views of the ocean and the gulfs on both sides, at the edge of the cape.

The road to Cape Taianaron ends south of the village of Kokkinogeia. If you want to visit the lighthouse, you will have to hike all the way to the edge of the cape. Along the way, you will find the ruins of an ancient Roman house with a beautiful mosaic floor, the little church of Agii Asomatoi, and some tiny secluded beaches with crystal-clear waters.
