Region of Grevena
Although primarily a winter mountain destination, the region is suitable for visiting all seasons. Verdant mountains, alpine lakes, rushing rivers, picturesque villages and old arched stone bridges make up the Macedonian landscape in Grevena. It is one the 13 prefectures of Macedonia, Greece, and occupies its southwest part. The region is rich in natural beauty, and mountain lovers will love this part of northern Greece at any time of year. The National Forest of Pindos, also called Valia Calda, lies in the north-western part and is a refuge for several species of birds and mammals. The prefecture has 17 stone bridges, all preserved in good condition. They are the largest and most impressive in all of Macedonia and their photos can be found in most tourist guides. Each one has its own undeniable historical and cultural value and add to the beauty of the riverbanks they adorn.
Grevena and the wider area is known throughout Greece for the mushrooms, which are pioneers in the flavors and dishes of the local cuisine. You can try a variety of mushrooms, mushroom soups, mushrooms pies even mushrooms sweets. Abandoned villages will take you back in time and will offer you lots of photo opportunities. Skiers and snowboarders can visit the ski resort of Vasilitsa which is considered amongst the best in Greece. And if you like hiking and have time for excursions, some off-road trails that go through verdant slopes filled with black pines will take you to the alpine Flega Lakes at an altitude of 1960 and 1940 meters respectively. Find everything you need to plan your perfect trip in this travel guide to the region of Grevena.
