Panagia Parthena is a tiny rocky islet off the west coast of Naxos Island. It is situated just above 400 meters away from the land of Mikri Vigla beach and owes its name to the small white church that is built on its rocks and which is dedicated to Panagia (Virgin Mary). The quaint church celebrates on the day of the Resumption of the Christ, 40 days after the Orthodox Easter. That day many faithful go to Panagia by boat to attend the Divine Liturgy. Right after, a big feast takes place on the islet with traditional music, accompanied by delicious local food and plenty of wine.
The construction date of the small church is yet a mystery but it is believed that it is more than 200 years old. Originally, it was dedicated to Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas) but according to the legend, it was a fisherman who dedicated the church to the Virgin in memory of the loss of his young daughter. On a stormy day, the fisherman left the young girl on the island to be safe but when he came back to pick her up, he found her dead. Its highly recommended to go to Panagia Islet by boat or canoe but if you are healthy and an experienced swimmer, you can even swim.
