Santorini Experience 2024

Santorini Experience is an annual dual-sport event held in one of the world’s top touristic destinations. Established in 2015, Santorini Experience includes open water swimming in the Aegean Sea and two trail running events (15km and 10km) along the Caldera. The Cycladic architecture and the scenic landscape of Santorini adds further excitement to this unique sport event.

Swimmers start from the harbour of the volcano and swim across a 1,5-mile (2,4km) route to finish to the old port of Fira. Both trail running events commence in Oia. Runners then follow the picturesque path that connects Santorini’s northmost settlement with the island’s capital, Fira and return to Oia to finish the race. The route ground is mostly a soil path with recessed stones in some places, a small part of asphalt road, and paved path.

The 10km route is suitable for experienced long-distance runners, while the 15km race “Aristides Alafouzos” is ideal for those who love strength, endurance, and adrenaline. Due to the difficulty of the courses, organisers have set age restrictions, allowing only participants older than 14 years old to enter the swimming event, and 12+ and 18+ years old to take part in the 10km and 15km races respectively.

Courses are designed by national open water swimming coach Nikos Gemelos and former marathon multiple national champion Nikos Pollias and are approved from the respective Hellenic Athletics and Swimming Federations.
