Ioannina
Ioannina is a city that connects the old with the new, thanks to its great history. It is the largest urban center of Epirus and one of the most beautiful cities in Greece, while it has a multitude of attractions.
One of the first things worth visiting is Lake Pamvotida, which is thought to be between 20,000 and 26,000 years old. The lake of legends, Kyra-Frosini and Durahan, with its dense shores and the mountains of Epirus reflected in its waters, gives the city this unique sense of peace and beauty. The life of the city revolves around it. Fishing, walking, boating, rowing, coffee and food by the water are some of the activities that the visitor can do.
The lake, with its untouched waters and the small island, is a natural monument, around which the whole city lives and breathes. The island of Lake Pamvotida has been associated with the story and death of Ali Pasha. Here, you can see many monasteries with the remarkable one of Agios Nikolaos the Charitable, which depicts seven full-length philosophers of antiquity, Plato, Solos, Aristotle, Plutarch, Thucydides, Apollonius and Lips.
The Castle is built on a small peninsula that overlooks the lake. A walk in the picturesque streets of the Castle revives the legends of Ali Pasha and Mrs. Frosini and the modern history of the city.
The routes through the city, the many attractions and museums, offer the feeling of another era, full of secrets and legends. Miraculous buildings such as the Hussein Matei House, the Ottoman Mosque in Veli Pasha and the entire historic center of Ioannina are unique attractions.
Among the many other beauties of Ioannina are the traditional buildings, the numerous mansions, the open-air theater of Frontzou, the clock of the central square and the tourist pavilion, as well as a large number of points of the city with strong historical and cultural value, which are excellent examples. of continental architecture.
Finally, the cultural history of Ioannina, with the great novelists and poets, the artistic and spiritual events, which are organized throughout the year, give the opportunity for an acquaintance with the roots of the spiritual tradition of Epirus.
