Iliochori Waterfalls (Balta di Stringa)
Nestled in the heart of Zagori, near the village of Iliochori, the Balta di Striga waterfalls are a breathtaking natural wonder. This stunning waterfall complex consists of three waterfalls in a row, the largest of which is over 25 meters (82 feet) high. Small natural pools are formed on their base by the icy water of the Kryopotamos River. The water is blue and the pools are perfect for a refreshing swim for adventurous travelers seeking a unique experience in nature.
The waterfalls lie east of Iliochori, at an altitude of 780 meters, surrounded by dense forests and pristine landscapes. To visit, first drive to Iliochori village, where you’ll find a parking area. From there, a 2.6 km scenic trail leads to the falls, starting from the main square and winding through the lush greenery of the Pindus mountains. The 20-minute walk is relatively easy and well-marked, but the path can be muddy or slippery depending on the season, so proper footwear is recommended. Along the way, you’ll cross the Petsos stone bridge, an elegant single-arch structure built in 1887, which perfectly complements the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful escape in nature, a scenic hike, or a cool dip in crystal-clear waters, the Balta di Striga waterfalls (Iliochori waterfalls) promise an unforgettable experience in one of Greece’s most enchanting landscapes.
