A Hidden Gem of Western Macedonia’s Highlands

Vythos is a traditional mountain village perched at 1,025 meters on the slopes of Mount Voio, in the Kozani regional unit of Western Macedonia, Greece. Nestled in a deep ravine and surrounded by beech, oak, and chestnut trees, this peaceful village offers visitors a glimpse into a proud past and enduring rural heritage.

Once known as Dólos, Vythos was famed for its master stonemasons. Their artistry gained international renown, with many craftsmen working as far afield as Constantinople and Persia (modern-day Iran). During its peak, the village was home to around 800 residents: today, fewer than 80 live here year-round, preserving its tranquil charm.

Sights & Attractions

The heart of the village features an 18th-century church dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. Just outside the village, the Taxiarchis Monastery (1453) in the area of Fteri is a significant religious landmark. Another must-see is the Holy Trinity Monastery near Prophet Elias hill, known for its preserved fortress-like architecture.

Local Traditions

On Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera), locals revive the tradition of launching hot-air balloons, paired with traditional Lenten foods. On August 13, the Mármaros square hosts a joyful village reunion with music and dance, welcoming Vythos locals from across the globe. On November 21, residents prepare Patsato, a beloved local dish made with river fish, to mark the feast of the village’s patron saint.
