Spanos Bridge Grevena: The Longest Stone Bridge in Macedonia

The Spanos Bridge (also known as Mustafa Pasha Bridge) is one of the most impressive stone bridges in northern Greece, located between the villages of Kosmati and Kipourio in the Grevena region. Spanning the scenic Venetikos River, this historic bridge remains in use today, serving local traffic between Ioannina and Grevena—a rare example of a traditional stone bridge still functioning in modern times.

History of Spanos Bridge

The site has long been a key river crossing. Historical accounts suggest an earlier bridge once stood here, possibly built during the Ottoman period under Sultan Bayezid, although it has not survived.

The current bridge dates back to 1846, when it was reconstructed through the patronage of Mustafa Pasha (Spanos) from Argyrokastro, from whom it takes its name.

Until the 1980s, a small mausoleum believed to be associated with the Ottoman era stood near the bridge, but it was unfortunately destroyed. In the past, the area also featured a caravanserai (inn) and a guard post, serving merchants and travelers moving between Thessaloniki and Epirus—highlighting the bridge’s importance along historic trade routes.

Architecture & Features

Spanos Bridge is a striking example of traditional stone engineering, built with exceptional craftsmanship using local stone, river rocks, and lime mortar. The bridge features five elegant arches, reinforced with smaller relieving openings above the piers that enhance both its stability and visual appeal.

Stretching approximately 85 meters in length and about 3.6 meters in width, it is considered the largest surviving stone bridge in the region of Macedonia and one of the most impressive in all of Greece. Its harmonious proportions and durable construction highlight the skill of local builders, while its timeless design blends seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape.

Location & How to Visit

The bridge is located:

  • 16 km southwest of Grevena (approx. 15–20 minutes)
  • 54 km north of Metsovo (approx. 45–50 minutes)

Easily accessible by car, it makes for an excellent road trip stop in Western Macedonia, especially if you’re exploring the stone bridges of Greece, or heading between Epirus and northern Greece.
